Aerial optical cables require steel wire for traction

Home / Aerial optical cables require steel wire for traction

The steel messenger acts as a structure that supports the weight of the fiber. These cables are normally provided with a metal laminate,( aluminum foil or corrugated steel tape), to protect them against moisture. There are two main types of aerial fiber optics: fibers supported by braided and self-supporting steel. The planned route may be undulating, rocky or both, making digging less appealing. An aerial cable is an insulated cable usually containing all fibres required for a telecommunication line, which is suspended between utility poles or electricity pylons.

INSTALLATION OF AERIAL FIBRE OPTIC CABLES

These cables are self supporting cables with an integrated messenger wire in the cable sheath. The messenger gives the cable a sufficient tensile strength and resistance to strain. The messenger is

GENERAL INFORMATION

Aerial Lashing Aerial installation can be preformed by lashing a fiber optic cable designed for aerial lashing to an existing steel messenger wire. These fiber optic cables may be lashed to the steel

Introduction to Aerial Fiber Cables

Since aerial cables are exposed to harsh outdoor environments and extreme weather conditions, the material used to make them must be sturdy and

Sag and Tension

A dielectric aramid yarn is used, typically by stranding it around the optical fiber cable core, providing the necessary tensile strength for aerial applications.

Installation – Aerial Lashing Guidelines Excerpt from Optical Cable

Aerial installation can be preformed by lashing a fiber optic cable designed for aerial lashing to an existing steel messenger wire. These fiber optic cables may be lashed to the steel messenger wire

Aerial Cable Placing Procedure

Aerial optical cable is suspended in the air from poles and/or support structures. Most often it is supported between poles by being lashed to a wire rope messenger strand with a small gauge wire.

How is the aerial laying of fiber optics carried out??

One is the fixed pulley traction method., including manual traction and mechanical traction method. The other is the movable release method for fiber optic cable trays..See more on zmscable.esThe Fiber Optic Association

The FOA Reference For Fiber Optics -Outside Plant

Since aerial cables are expected to last a very long time, the messenger wire and lashing wire material should be chosen appropriately, including corrosion
