In a fiber optic cable, many individual optical fibers are bound together around a central steel cable or high-strength plastic carrier for support. This core is then covered with protective layers of materials such as aluminum, Kevlar, and polyethylene (the cladding). There are different types of fiber optic cables because each type is optimized for specific applications that have unique requirements for bandwidth, transmission distance, and environmental factors. Optical fiber is a type of cable for transmitting data using pulses of light – this is significantly faster than using traditional copper cabling systems. Unlike copper wires, which are limited by lower data transmission speeds, shorter transmission distances, and higher susceptibility to electromagnetic interference, fiber optic cables offer unparalleled performance and can cover much greater distances without bumping up against signal degradation.
